Rogue One: A Star Wars Story has a lot riding on its shoulders. To say that Star Wars: The Force Awakens performed exceptionally well last December would be an understatement. Domestically, the film is now the number one box office performer of all time. But that film had the benefit of not only a 10-year dearth of Star Wars in the theaters but also acting as a sequel to the beloved original trilogy. As a standalone story with no ties to the Skywalkers, (other than a purportedly brief appearance by Darth Vader), Rogue One will either prove or tank the notion that the galaxy far, far away has more to offer than the legacy of one family. With a young Han Solo project already deep into pre-production and many more spinoffs in the works, this December will likely act as a crystal ball concerning the long-term viability of the Star Wars property.
Disney recently released an exclusive new look at Rogue One as a part of its Holiday Celebration special that aired Thanksgiving night. While the minute-long teaser didn’t boast much new footage, it still extended and contextually adjusted some moments to give moviegoers a better idea of what to expect tonally from the upcoming film.
Now, just a day later, Lucasfilm has released an updated and extended version of the sneak peek under the name “Trust” (see above). The core of the feature is the same, but it has new bookends featuring a flashback of Jyn’s mother and a humorous action beat with Donnie Yen’s Chirrut Îmwe and Jiang Wen’s Baze Malbus.
